Confidence Building for Young Entrepreneurs

How young entrepreneurs build the kind of confidence that lasts — by doing one brave thing at a time.

Some of the bravest people we know are 9 years old behind a folding table at a Saturday market. Here's the secret nobody tells you about confidence: it doesn't show up before you start. It shows up after.

Be brave one customer at a time

Don't try to be brave for the whole day. Just be brave for the next customer. Then the next one. By the end of the day you'll realize you did the whole thing.

Practice your three sentences

Have three sentences ready: what you're selling, how much it costs, and your favorite thing about it. Practice them out loud in the mirror. By the fifth customer they'll come out automatically.

It's okay to feel nervous

Nervous means you care. Adults feel nervous too. The brave kids aren't the ones who don't feel nervous — they're the ones who say hi to the next customer anyway.

Courage isn't the absence of fear. It's smiling at the next customer anyway.

Celebrate what you did, not what you sold

On the drive home, talk about three things you're proud of that aren't about the money. 'I talked to a stranger I didn't know.' 'I didn't quit when nobody bought for an hour.' 'I figured out my own price for the bigger size.'
